May Rescue News!

JULIP – A PREMATURE FREE-TAIL PUP

Sometimes the best things just can’t wait and arrive a little bit early. Shortly after her mother was rescued after being grounded in front of a local restaurant, Julip decided to make her entry. She was born with the assistance of caregivers here at Bat World Sanctuary. Thankfully the birth went smoothly, however, because Julip wasn’t quite in the oven long enough, she wasn’t fully baked! She is premature and has some minor birth defects with her wings, but she is otherwise a healthy baby bat.

Julip and her mama, Mint, are doing well, and mama Mint has fully recovered. Julip is spunky and full of personality, not letting her small size stop her from exploring the world around her. Once Julip is no longer dependent on her mother, Mint will be released to fly free once again. Due to Julip’s wing deformities and small size, she will be a permanent resident and receive lifelong care from the staff, whose hearts she has already touched.

Donations from compassionate people like you allow us to save sweet bats like Julip and Mint.

Baby bat calls and rescues are now coming at the rate of over a dozen per day. Thank you for anything you can give to help us rescue these innocent beings this summer. DONATE HERE to show your support!

*Please remember, never handle a bat bare handed. We are trained and vaccinated professionals who sometimes choose to forgo the use of gloves to have better tactile sensitivity when handling tiny patients.

BUILD A BAT WORLD LEARNING CENTER – MATCHING GRANT!

Construction on the Bat World Learning Center started last year and is almost 60%  complete. Once finished, we will be able to provide educational programs for all age groups. We will also provide rehabilitation training courses, animal control courses, bat exclusion courses, and host on-site interns  from around the world. We recently received a matching grant donation from one of our amazing donors for $25,000

Our construction estimate/budget can be found here. Our goal for the matching grant which will go toward framing the inner walls and installing a septic tank. CLICK HERE TO DONATE toward this critical project!

OUR GERI”BAT”RIC UNITS ARE FINISHED!

Thanks to the overwhelming support we received from our donors, both of the upgraded geriatric units are complete! The upgraded enclosures allow caregivers easier access to the bats within and can be cleaned more quickly and efficiently than the previous set up, which means less stress for our most delicate patients. We love our bats dearly, and we not only want to ensure our residents live their lives happily and peacefully in the sanctuary, but we also strive to insure the tasks involving animal care are manageable for our staff. The improvements made to the units have significantly cut down cleaning time, which frees up staff for other rescues.

❗️TEMU – ACTION ALERT!❗️

Temu is allowing the sale of bat taxidermy. Bat conservation recently had a big win when Etsy officially banned the sale of bats. Sadly, Temu has not followed their example. Bats are killed/harvested by the thousands overseas in order to created these grotesque displays, then, they are imported into the United States to sell to the unsuspecting public, often labeled as “ethically sourced.” They wind up for sale on sites like Etsy, Amazon, eBay, and Temu, costing the lives of countless bats.

Temu sellers are sometimes advertising these bats as resin, but they are 100% real. We implore our followers to visit Temu.com and search for “taxidermy bats” and “bat skeletons”. If you see any active listings, hit “Report issue”. Select “Issues other than those listed above” as the report reason, and then either write your own detailed reason or use one of the suggested templates below. The more people who report, the better chance we have to put an end to this harmful trade!

❗️ Below are a few templates you can use when reporting these listings:

* This item is unethical, unsustainable, and is contributing to the decline of bat populations world wide.

* These bats are not ethically sourced, and poaching/hunting bats for taxidermy is cruel and harming bat populations.

* This item is fraud, as it was a live animal and not resin. The item description is misleading and these animals are not ethically sourced.

* Some of the bats being sold are threatened and endangered species, which are federally protected, and the unethical trade of these bats is contributing to the decline of their populations.
