BAT WORLD SANCTUARY

The Largest Bat Sanctuary on Earth

Bat World Sanctuary is on the front line to end the mistreatment of bats. Each year we rescue hundreds of bats who might otherwise die. Lifetime sanctuary is given to non-releasable bats, including those that are orphaned, injured, and rescued from the exotic pet trade, zoos and research facilities. We are also involved in conservation efforts both locally and internationally.

Bat World was founded in 1994 and is a 501c3 non-profit, accredited organization with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

These are the impeccable toes of Cornelius, a Jamaican fruit bat. How to bat toes even work, you ask? Well, bats have specialized tendons that allow their toe claws to lock into place when they hang. That's why bats can hang upside down without using any muscles or real exertion - gravity does all of the work for them! Bats also use their toe claws like tiny combs to groom their fur, keeping it soft and silky, much like a cat. :) 💚🦇

Say hello to Graham, an Eastern red bat that was found after going for an accidental swim in a nearby lake. He was found treading water and extremely weak, but was saved by some kind people that drove him all the way to us! He arrived in style, comfortably nestled in a graham cracker box. He will be released in a few weeks once he's a bit stronger! ❤️ #bat #wildlife #wildliferescue

Did you know we have a brand new batty live cam?

That's right! The Captain's Corner is now streaming 24/7, so you can watch him and the Florida girls anytime you want. While the flying foxes mainly take up in this area, this cam gives a great view of the entire indoor enclosure.

Please forgive us for the lack of volume on the bat cam page, we should have that back up and running soon! 🦇

Did you know Jamaican fruit bats are a species of leaf-nosed bat characterized by a leaflike shape on their nose, this feature helps bats navigate, hunt, and avoid obstacles by using echolocation. Echolocation occurs when a sound wave is emitted, it bounces off objects and returns an echo that provides information about the object’s distance and size! This helps Jamaican fruit bats navigate even in complete darkness.🦇❤️

How do we know it’s treat time? Because Captain won’t let us forget! 😆

It is his favorite time of the evening after all, and who can blame him? One of the caregivers is going to come fill his treat puzzle with delicious melon treats! That is something to get excited about if you ask me. ❤️

Happy #batbootyfriday 🦇

This plump posterior is brought to you by the bodacious Bentley, one of the many Mexican freetails that was rescued in July with wing wasting. Bentley is also one of many who will be non-releasable and join our permanent colony here at the sanctuary. I think you can tell by the roundness of his rear that he is totally fine with that, and is very much enjoying his recovery and mealworm meals. 😁
