New York—bats in bat house that needed to be moved

January 2, 2022 @ 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM

A homeowner reached out to us regarding bats in a bat house that needed to be moved so siding on the house could be replaced. We explained that when bats awaken from hibernation, it causes them to lose up to 30% of their fat reserve, which is critical to survive the winter. Without this reserve they typically starve to death before spring hits and insects are once again plentiful. We also explained that if the bat house needs to be removed soon then the bats should be transferred to a rescuer who can over-winter them until spring. Lastly, we asked if the work could possibly wait until spring when it is safe to move the bat house. The homeowner contacted us back saying thank you so very much for the info, and that she had informed her husband… “I will divorce him if they don’t leave that side of the house alone until spring!!”
