Florida – baby bat mistaken for moss

May 18

While outside doing yard cleanup with her family, a mother in Lakeland, FL was shocked to hear that her daughter had discovered some bats on the ground. She had mistaken the bats for dead moss, and as she went to pick it up one of the bats flew away, leaving behind the second bat, which appeared to be a baby. Thankfully the girl had not touched the bat bare handed, and her mother called us right away. We provided guidance on how to safely contain the bat and located a bat-trained rescuer in the finder’s area. The baby was transferred to a rescuer where he/she will be hand-raised and released when old enough to survive.
