Rupert the evening bat is feeling glum today. Despite being rescued from the extreme heat and drought (and consequent lack of tasty bugs) in Athens TX yesterday by bat lover Amanda, and transported to Bat World MidCities by transport volunteer Kristi, he has just learned that he’s going to have to stay here a while and will not be able to participate in any races. Although his initial exam didn’t reveal any injuries that would account for his grumpy disposition, a more thorough examination has revealed a dislocated knee. Leg injuries in bats are extremely difficult to treat, because of their complicated anatomy. For now, we have canceled all sporting events for Rupert, and he is being treated with pain medication and bed rest. Time will tell whether he can be released, depending on how he heals.
