A young Mexican free-tail pup fell from her roost and landed onto the hood of a car driving beneath in Kingman, Arizona. Unable to find a local rescuer, the finder took her to a veterinarian, hoping they could help. Unfortunately, vets rarely know much about bats, and often give out inaccurate and harmful advice. In this case, the veterinarian instructed the finder to feed the pup “milk with sugar added” and pour water over the baby to help with hydration. We were finally contacted by the finder approximately 4 days later, as the starving pup would not drink cows milk. We located a bat-trained rescuer in the finder’s area. The bat was transferred to a rescuer where she will be assessed for hopeful release back to the wild.
