Bats and Coronavirus, Ebola and Others
– The Facts
Why are bats always blamed for epidemics like Coronavirus and Ebola?
Unlike humans, bats can harbor diseases without becoming sick because they have a natural immunity. In fact, bats are natural reservoirs for more than 60 viruses that (although rarely) can infect humans such as Ebola, rabies, and Histoplasmosis.
The important thing to understand is that bats aren’t just flying around willy-nilly spreading diseases to humans. It’s the way humans are treating bats that is allowing these diseases to spread. For example, humans are hunting and eating bats (a common practice in Africa and Asia), encroaching on bat habitat to raise livestock and build homes, and even harvesting bats for the cruel exotic pet trade.
