June Rescue News!

THE BABIES

This video shows just a few of the orphaned bats we currently have in care. Many of these innocent lives are motherless due to human disturbance, although storms and bird attacks are also contributing factors. Every summer we save the lives of hundreds of orphaned bats, nursing them back to health and getting them back to their rightful place in the wild.

SWEET BARBIE

She lost her baby. He was stillborn, with a huge bruise covering his entire head. How did this happen? Because this sweet, innovent mother sought shelter inside a truck stop during a rainstorm and was then hit with a broom by an ignorant person.

We drove two long hours to rescue her while she waited in pain from a back injury caused by the broom. She immediately received pain medication and fluids after her arrival, and thankfully, she was able to eat a little that evening. Her baby was stillborn the next morning.

She is lost without her baby, and we will be lost without bats. We let the broom wielding person know this, and he was sorry for his actions. With luck, this little mom will heal and can be released to try again next summer. In the meantime, she will receive the best care we can give her. If her back injury prevents her from flying again, we will take care of her for life, which could be as long as 20 years. Thanks to you, our caring supporters, we are able to do just that.

WILLOW AND SAPLING

Willow and her pup, Sapling, were rescued from the storage area of a local hair salon. Thankfully the staff called us and we were able retrieve the laboring mother. After being cleaned up and fed, Willow seemed to know she was safe. Just a few hours after Willow was rescued, Sapling was born. Willow and Sapling will receive all the care they need until the baby is old enough to be released with her mother, which will be in mid to late August.

DAPHNE

This darling evening bat was living the dream in a tropical-style backyard in Weatherford, TX, complete with blooming flowers, swaying umbrellas, and an all-you-can-eat mosquito buffet beside a sparkling pool. The perfect oasis for a tiny bat!

We were originally called out to the home to rescue a grounded pup and install a pup catcher on one of the homeowners bat houses. But while there, we spotted Daphne hanging low and still just beneath the roost — not a good sign. As we worked to secure the pup catcher below the bat house, team member Ashley gently plucked Daphne down for a wellness check. Sure enough, she was found to have injuries to both her wing and leg, likely caused by attacks from the local blue jay population.

Thankfully, Daphne is now safe at Bat World Sanctuary and receiving the treatment she needs to recover. With some rest and a little TLC, we’re hopeful she’ll be able to return to her lush backyard paradise very soon. 🌴✨

KEEPING BATS SAFE THIS SUMMER

If you have an outdoor pool please add a frog log and well as a critter skimmer (comes in round and square!). Both of these items can save countless lives every summer, like little Skimmer below, a frog-sized evening bat who was found clinging to clump of leaves in a swimming pool in following a severe summer storm.

Little “Skimmer” floated in the pool until he was discovered the following morning by the homeowner and developed aspiration pneumonia from inhaling the water. Thankfully, after several weeks in care, he recovered. A frog log may have allowed him to find his way out of the pool and safely fly away.

FOLGER

We understand the struggle all too well of being way to groggy in the morning and needing a cup of coffee to get us in gear. However, a coffee machine inside a gas station is not the best place for a bat to be!

This Eastern red bat pup was safely contained and brought to the sanctuary. It was a good thing too, he is far to young for coffee and milk formula is a much healthier choice for a little bat like Folger. We promised him after a few good meals he would have his strength and energy back, no caffeine needed! Once he has grown a little more and honed his flight skills, we will be set free to fly out in the wild once again.
