BAT WORLD SANCTUARY

The Largest Bat Sanctuary on Earth

Bat World Sanctuary is on the front line to end the mistreatment of bats. Each year we rescue hundreds of bats who might otherwise die. Lifetime sanctuary is given to non-releasable bats, including those that are orphaned, injured, and rescued from the exotic pet trade, zoos and research facilities. We are also involved in conservation efforts both locally and internationally.

Bat World was founded in 1994 and is a 501c3 non-profit, accredited organization with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

Happy Sunday!

Good morning from Travis, a rescued Mexican free-tail bat! Travis is so excited to be picked for breakfast first that he has requested extra of our finest mealworms this morning. We are always more than happy to accommodate our amazing guests with any request, no matter how big or small! ❤️

Snack time!

Our African fruit bats want to apologize for the delay in getting our internet fixed! As you can hear, all of the bats are currently on the phone with representatives and are demanding that it gets turned back on tomorrow. They have also demanded that they bring delicious melon treats with them for the inconvenience! We are hoping for a swift fix tomorrow morning. ❤️

Happy #Baturday

The Florida girls are up and at em on this stormy Saturday! Not only are they getting first dibs on their favorite treat “dates” but they wanted to let everyone know that a strong set of storms have been passing through and has knocked our facilities internet down! We are trying to get everything back up and running ASAP. If you are calling for a rescue please leave a voicemail and we will get back to you within the hour. ☺️

Until then, the Florida girls are wishing everyone a relaxing Saturday and a reminder to get your daily dose of “dates” in. ❤️

It's Wishlist Wednesday! 🦇

Did you know we have an Amazon wishlist? We are very much in need of the Dixie cups for treats, whey powder and decaffeinated black tea for the fruit bat food, medium blue gloves, bleach tabs, white trash bags, and paper towels! If you would like to send any of these supplies directly to the bats, you can find them all on our wishlist. 😁

Our wishlist is an invaluable tool for donations, and it allows us to spend less time on supply runs, and more time saving bats. Check out the link below! ❤

Happy #batappreciationday! ❤🦇

If your day includes soap, shampoo, cosmetics, a toothbrush and toothpaste, coffee, margarine, paper or ink, cushions, wood furniture, fuel or lubricating fluids, rope or twine, timber, boats or canoes, ornamental trees, life saving medicines, air fresheners, candles, rubber, chewing gum, spices, vegetables, fruits, chocolate or even margaritas or beer, you are not only involved with bats, you are dependent upon bats. Bats pollinate or disperse the seeds of many valuable plants and trees including wild banana, avocado, date, fig, mango, eucalyptus and balsa wood, just to name a few. It is the fruit bats that are responsible for 98% of the reforestation of the world's rain forests (the lungs of our planet). Without fruit bats we would lose entire forests without felling a single tree.

About seventy percent of all bats are insect eaters that feed on a tremendous diversity of bugs including the pests that consume the crops we need to survive. Each bat is capable of eating a whopping 5,000 insects per night; a lactating female will eat twice that amount. The 20 million bats (the single largest warm blooded mammal colony population on earth), that roost at Bracken Cave in Texas, eat 200 tons of insects each summer evening. Bats eat crop pests that cost farmers billions of dollars annually. Insect control by bats keeps down prices of fruits and vegetables at the market place.

Bats are a keystone species and they have long played essential roles in our lives. Their loss today would compromise the health and stability of our environment. Bat Appreciation Day is a tribute to these little agricultural vacuum cleaners in the sky, controllers of fruit flies, dispersers of seeds, and pollinators of products we both need and desire.

We had to share one of our favorite photos from @Bat World Bulgaria again, because we also appreciate just how stinking cute bats are! 😁

Thank you, dear bats, we would be lost without you.
