So happy he healed and was able to be released! Congratulations!
Excellent – I was not aware of the USDA regulation. What a thorough, professional job you did on this! Honored to share it.
With much respect,
Thank you Deb! Your input was very valuable to us.
Please help keep bats out of the pet trade, they do not belong in cages as pets.
I have worked as a volunteer in raptor rehabilitation and the first thing we were taught was that these animals are WILD animals and should never be viewed or treated as pets, even those who were permanently disabled, habituated and used in education programs. People were selected carefully and monitired to insure respect for the wildness of the animal was always in place. This should be a requirement for anyone who obtaines a wildlife license and I hope ECHO and the other exotic animals are removed from Lisa’s collection and her license is revoked!
Dara I am so happy to see your post. (First off, another Dara there aren’t that many of us) second it is obvious you share my love of bats as well as birds. I have for a long time been interested in what I can do to help, and have often thought of getting involved in wildlife rehabilitation. It sounds like the program you went through was a reputable, and excellent program. I would like to learn more about the program you went through, or others that you know are truly reputable.
Thank you so much for being a true friend to wildlife.
Don’t shoot bats!
Stop killing this wonderful creatures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for spearheading this.Well done! Please keep us updated. Thank you!
I came across this site by accident a few weeks ago and I am now enthralled with all things bat. I just had a question about the bats playing with toys, it is so cute and why do they like the toys so much? Are they playful like various other animals? What you are doing is amazing. I live in the US so I am going to do some research. Thank you for your time and keep up the good work! <3
Bats are very intelligent and curious so it seems to come natural for them to engage in play. We try to provide as much natural and “unnatural” enrichment as possible. Here are links to videos where you can watch the bats at Bat World playing with toys:
I’ve asked many times but no reply. WHO IS MONITORING THE KILLINGS? and if you are paying someone to do so WHY NOT BUY WILDLIFE NETTING?
Do the RIGHT THING!
What would the world do without Bats? When was the last time you saw a HUMAN pollinate a flower or eat insects on the fly?
What gives you the right? STOP NOW!!
All animals were created by God, are loved by all and serve us in the end. Many Bats love to eat nasty bugs….. that helps everyone!
I found myself both laughing and crying over this book, a children’s book no less! I loved the lessons so subtly included, that all animals are individuals with feelings of their own, to the fact that we should all treat each other with kindness despite our differences. This book will be a collectors item for sure.
At first I thought, wow – $24.95 for a children’s book?! I am used to paying $18 to $20 tops for a new hard-back kid’s book but thought, hey, it’s for a good cause. So glad I bit the bullet! It’s a good story for sure, but the illustrations are phenomenal and remind me of Stella Luna. I am in love with this book. Well done Bat World!
The is a monumental children’s book because of the lessons learned within its pages. Lady Gaga should read this book because it substantiates the words in her song, “Born This Way”. I have no doubt in mind that this book will become a classic as the years pass. Beautiful. Both the author and illustrator should be extremely proud.
Gracious, this is an amazing book! What a lesson to teach young children – to embrace your differences. Yes, it brought tears to my eyes as a single thought ran through my head -’Thank God some adults put to paper what children experience all the time’. In a new world of bullies, children feeling inadequate, competition, peer pressure – this book covers it all and it does it in a way that allows all children (of any age) to understand that differences make you special. Well done and congratulations, but most of all – THANK YOU!
Please do the right thing. We all know what that is. Thank you.
I absolutely loved Baby See Through! The illustrations are amazing and the story is so touching, I have to say it brought tears to my eyes! Every night since we got our book its been the only one the kids wanna read before bed =) Thanks for all your hard work on this wonderful book!!
“Baby See-through” is adorable, wonderful, sweet, and informative! The book teaches not only about bats, but a gentle lesson about human behavior and being kind. The illustrations are adorable, and take all the “scary” out of looking at bats. Baby See-through himself is a sweet, forgiving little chap. I can’t imagine any child who wouldn’t enjoy a peek into the “secret lives” of these gentle little creatures.
I admit I was slightly concerned about paying for a book being sold as a “fundraiser,” but my fears were baseless. The book is sturdy, slick, and professionally printed and bound — very high quality — and the writing and illustrations are top-notch.
I believe you’ve created a book that could truly impact the lives of bats by exposing a new generation to the true nature of these little animals. You’ve done a great service! Congratulations, and get ready to order many thousands more!
Stop killing innocent creatures!
Has Echo (and the other wild animals) been rescued? It is a shame “Lisa” appears to reject useful information regarding bats and their unique needs. Her lack of response for so long gives me the sense that while her intentions may be good, she is in fact abusing animals. A lack of response is very unprofessional. Wild animals (and domesticated animals) can be very dangerous to others when frightened or misunderstood. “Lisa” does not appear to have the appropriate knowledge to be a “licensed wildlife rehabilitator”. Thank you for bringing her Facebook to our attention. Sincerely, Nancy McGinnis
They sent me a scanned letter via email in response to signing…
Stop killing the bats. They are beneficial animals & part of the ecosystem that is essential to keeping nature in balance. There are other non-evasive methods that are more effective and not deadly. Please do use the bats as an excuse. It is appalling that these beautiful animals are falling victim to negative press & opinion.
My copy of ‘Baby-See-through’ arrived today ..and I was all smiles… As soon as I unwraped it (ever so carefully) .. I was still all smiles… I began to read it and my smile grew bigger and bigger … as I sit here looking at this beautiful book … Amanda you have written a Bat book Masterpiece … It is beautifully written and beautifully Illustrated .. Amanda, your Mom is smilling as much as I am right now… Thank you for ‘Baby See-through’ OXOX, from Dolores and (tiny bat hugs) oxxoxoxo from all your tiny babies.
He is Sooooo Cute!!!! Sometimes I wish I was a bat at Bat World!! Not joking!!!!
Poor Sarah!!! I hope that the manager learned not to put that stuff on the store anymore!!
This book is an absolute delight! Both of my girls were enthralled with the story. We as a family over the years have gotten to know you and your organization…. And appreciate your dedication and passion for these often misunderstood creatures. My girls are fortunate to possess an understanding and appreciation of bats even many adults lack. I thank you and your volunteers/staffs tireless efforts for that. I would highly suggest this book be in every child’s stocking this Christmas
He was obviously a hero in more ways than one. I am sorry for your loss and yet happy to know that there were people like this.
Major Lollar, you remain an inspiration to us all. What a wonderful legacy you’ve left for the rest of us. Sending love and condolences to your family and friends.
I’m so sorry about your dad he will be loved and missed by so many people. I hope you know we will be here with you through this hard time. Just know him and your mom are watching over you and they are at piece together now. I love you amanda!
I’m so sorry to hear of this great loss to humankind. May peace be with his loved ones in their time of grief.
My dear friend..I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. From what you told me,he was a great guy. I know you will miss him,but know he lives on,thru the works he did for the sanctuary.
First.. Thank you Major Luther S. Lollar for *all* you did for the rest of us!
Secondly, but not finally, Thank you for all you have done for Bat World Sanctuary bats.
Many thoughts of love, hugs, and condolences are being sent to his Friends and Family (Amanda…..)
What an extraordinary individual! Good people always find each other when there are animals involved. I read where he has been dubbed, ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ because of the win for Bat World against that pitiful excuse of a human being that defamed Bat World. You are a great organization with a super attorney and he volunteers at the sanctuary as well – Wow!
Amanda, So sorry about your Daddy. I miss mine every day. Love, Meg
Amanda, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Men like your father were truly America’s greatest generation of heroes.
Knowing that he loved you and supported your life’s calling must be a great comfort to you.
Our thoughts are with you. Love, Randee and Tommy
I am SO sorry for your–and the rest of the world’s–loss, Amanda. It seems he just couldn’t NOT continue to be a HERO after the wars!! Was in AWE and was totally astounded and humbled reading about him. There’s a feeling of GREAT loss and sadness here. I’ll be praying for you, your family and friends, and Bat World. Love-you-and-never-met-you, Charlotte.
I did not have the pleasure of knowing Major Lollar but I know his daughter Amanda. I know her selflessness, dedication, and love of animals. Everything I have heard about Major Lollar tells me that the apple did not fall far from the tree. He must have been a very special man and his passing is a great loss to this world.
We are so sad and so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. We are saddened also by the incredible sense of loss you must be feeling. Your dad was quite a guy, in so very many ways! We consider ourselves lucky that we got to meet him, and we think of him every time we look at his bat house that’s mounted on our home. We carry you in our hearts and hope the good memories you have of your Dad will eventually help ease the pain of his loss.
Jan & Bruce
Please accept my heartfelt sympathies and prayers on the passing of Major Lollar. I am saddened to have missed a chance to speak with such an amazing, compassionate and dedicated man. I know he will probably enjoy getting to know my Uncle Chas. The world has grown dimmer for his passing but Heaven is brighter….The most important thing is his daughter Amanda has proven to be equally a fighter and tough as nails. What man would not be proud of a daughter such as her…..
We are so sorry for your loss. Your father was a brave, generous man and the world will be a poorer place for his passing. Clearly he was proud of you and all you have done — no father could have asked for a more compassionate and dedicated daughter, and your life and work is his legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Amanda, please accept my condolences on your father’s passing. He sounds like a terrifc father and amazing hero. I am sending hugs and prayers to you.
Dear God, Please surround Amanda with Your angels’ wings, to give her comfort and ease at this tiime. Thank You, Lord. Amen
What a wonderful man your dad was.He wasn’t just a father but someone who was there to support you with your passion .Very few people in this world like that I know he’ll be missed dearly. Love to you and yours.
A truly inspirational story about a truly inspirational and true man who leaves us as he deserves to, with those military honors. My condolences to those he leaves behind.
what will they do when there are no more bats to pollinate there trees? the bees are being whiped out too from pestacides so all the fruit trees will stop repoducing if not pollinated
Humans will never be happy unless they destroy the world and us all in it!!!!!!!Humans are the WORST of the WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are so sorry, Amanda, to hear of the loss of your father. I hope the wonderful memories you created together, and the wonderful life you shared, will be a great source of comfort to you. Kathy & Prudi & the DFW Wildlife Coalition Family
Loved the preview pages available and can’t wait for the book to arrive. I agree with so many others that commented on the gorgeous illustrations and wonderful story.
As a long time donor to Alley Cat Allies, I just loved this story. What a great way for her to repay your kindness. May she have many more years of rescuing in her.
Stop kiilling the bats.
I’m so sorry Amanda for your loss. He definitely completed an inspirational life, and lead one of the most influential women in our lifetime (you) to great success. May his love and determination live on in bat world. I think it would be wonderful if you named one of the rescue bats major.. keep his spirit living on!! My heart goes out to you and the rest of your family! I miss you Amanda!
…..cease this barbaric activity…bats are part of the creative balance ♥
Stop this barbaric practice if shooting bats . Use nets. !!!!!
I will help. Tell us where to donate. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you Jane! The link to donate is in the gold text, right above the signature in the letter. Just click the gold text to be taken to the Mozilla Challenge page. Thank you again!
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I know how close you were to him and loved him very much. Good luck raising the money for the new facility.
Amanda, is there a timeline you need to follow? How much time before things need to be solidified and break ground?
And- I am very sorry to hear about your dad<:(
Robin, there is no timeline, we will begin as soon as enough funds are raised!
Thank you, Janette and Robin.
I’m confused. You say in letter $3…$6….etc. And that’s what I put in emails to over 50 people. But when I went to donate, the minimum is $10.
So sorry! When we wrote out the calculations we did not realize that the challenge page had set a minimum donation at $10.00…
I had the same problem………..sent note to my friends……..and oopsie……..got emails stating they had to donate minimum of 10.00. That sucks.
Will be donating! I admire your dedication! The time and effort it takes to do what you do is very admirable! Thank you for being a beacon!!!
Sorry abt your Dad. My Dad died from Parkinson’s too. I used to catch wild Bats in my 100 yr old house & set them free. Have loved them since 1990. I am happy to help build a new sanctuary. God bless you.
We will help! So sorry about your dad. God Bless you all.
I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I will definitely donate! This will be done!
So sorry about your dad Amanda. I can picture him cutting up all that fruit and delivering it for the fruit bats every day -what a kind man! I’m making my first donation to this worthy cause in his memory.
Where do we donate? Is there a site that we need to donate through?
Please see the link on the page or go here. Thank you!: http://www.crowdrise.com/BatWorldSanctuary2012
I hope everyone donates at least the minimum for the beautiful bats. Wish I could give more this week. <3
I will definitely donate for a new facility. I am so in awe of what you do.
I was drawn to bat World Sanctuary and Mr Kitty by a chance discovery of the youtube story of Li’l Drac. Such is fate that brought Mr Kitty to my heart and a portrait of him to my home. I am his mother now. Maybe one of them even. We are family. I already have a Mr Kitty who is a cat, so now we are complete. Cat that’s a bat and bat that’s a cat. I hope he has a long and healthy life. Mr Kitty, that’s a bat can also be seen on my FB Page. Soon there will be artwork added inspired by his story. Anyone can visit: Little Brown Art was set up to bring awareness to White Nose Syndrome and well, everything and anything that I and bat like-minded friends can come up with. Thanks BWS
As a lover of both bats and cats, and supporter of both Bat World and Alley Cat Allies, I think that this is my favorite animal anecdote ever!
Bats are the helpers of our Eco system. Killing them upsets natures sensitive balance.
Please have a heart and don’t shot one of God’s creatures!
Please, for the love of God, nature and survival, STOP this inhumane practice! HUMANS are the most vile predator to OUR Earth. Stop this nonsense!
Please. Stop the killing.
I had the privalege to grown up next door to Luther. He was an extradoinary man! I remember as a child, a fawn got caught in our fence. Its back leg was broken. Dad said we needed to put it down. We children said no taken it to Mr. Lollar he can fix it. Dad picked it up telling us it was not going to make it. But we had faith in Mr Lollar. He bound the leg and kept it in his barn about 8 weeks. Oneday he called and told us to come over he was going to set it free. It is a great memory! That is the kind of man this world lost. My thoughts and prayers are with you Amanda!
What a beautiful story for the cats and the little bats. I’m so glad that Mr. Kitty took so well to Bat World’s ‘cave.’ It sounds like Ms. Kitty is a smart cat and appreciates what you have done for her and is helping out.
I just received my copy of “Baby See Through”. What a beautifully written and illustrated book!! I have to tell you, I’m a 63 year old single woman. No children, so no grandchildren…..I got the book for myself! Some people think I’m “Batty”…LOL, which I’m proud to say that I am. Since ‘lil dracs video, I am just in love with these little creatures, and I am SO thankful for all you and your volunteers do to save them.
Oh my goodness, the suffering she must have endured! I have never seen anything so horrific happen to an animal. It’s so amazing Puff has recovered, but so sad to think this may happen anytime, anywhere, and people would ignore it just because it’s a bat… I hope you are flying in peace now, Puff!
We love bats and simply think they are amazing creatures!
We love lil drac
Thanks for doing what we all wish we could do! Donating now:)
I’m so sorry for your loss…
RIP Major Lollar. I agree with Lee, Kate and Martin – Bat World is his legacy. I also think naming a rescued bat after him would be a great idea.
This is a lovely story with beautiful illustrations. I love the format and binding, and the bookmark, too! I’m delighted with the whole thing! Thank you Batworld for being here!
Who will be checking the numbers? Who will be picking up the dead and wounded? I want answers Please and want them now!
as a consumer I have a right to know where my fruit is coming from and yes even if it’s shipped oversea. I don’t want my family eating fruit from any farmer who shoots bats.
as a consumer I have THE right to know where my fruit is coming from — and yes even if it’s shipped overseas. I don’t want My Family eating fruit from ANY farmer who shoots bats. Also — with this unforgivable act going on — if at any time in future decide to travel I Will Not be visiting there . No Tourist money from me or mine, and I know other people who feel the same way.
I agree 100%
This is absurd. What gives you the right to interfere in God’s ways? Man is the problem not nature.
Stop the senseless killing. There is a better way, Bats are too importany to ecosystems!
when killing flying foxes farmers should count every female as two. At this time of the year when a female is killed her baby will die as well.
It’s sad to know, people kill bat because of ignorance. Believing they will eat your blood or some king of dark and evil forces. the Tequila plant is pollinate only because of bats. they formed a balance in nature helping vs insects, pollinating flowers.
Like some folks here say: Humans are the World’s cancer.
year 2012 and we’re destroying our planet.
When are we going to open the eyes ?
Human Animals are the worst animals on this planet. Ignorant, selfish, cruel, war-like the list goes on. We are not the only ones who have the privilage of living on this earth. God didn’t create just us!
Other animals should have the right to live here w/o being killed for no good reason or because someone gets a kick out of it-most hunters who wish to think they are real men by how many antlers a buck has. Real men don’t kill!
There is a better way that doesn’t hurt the farmers or the bats it doesn’t make any sense at all to not just do it that way. Please use the right nets and this can all be helped.
I had always thought You Aussies were known to be lovers of nature. All of the nature shows, all of the articles that come out of your country seem to enforce that idea. Then we find out that your kill, shoot, electrocute, net with razor wire one of the most beneficial of all mammals. Do you not know what you are doing to your country as well as the world. We need pollinators, we need seed scatterers, we need insect control. Are you as a country willing to take on these jobs when you have killed all of the bats. You cannot be a bat killer and an environmentalist at the same time. So I guess you are just Bat killers. Shame on you. I will discourage all of my friends about traveling to your country. After all you may determine tourist are a pest and shoot us.
Shame on you, you should be ashamed.
Unfortunately Mary, we had a change in government that is promoting mining and residential developments that destroy habitat. Their destruction of the environment is nothing short of devastating to us in Queensland, a state of Australia. They are currently working on destroying the barrier reef for mining and oil. I am so embarrassed to say I actually voted for them. That won’t happen again!
I diffidently agree with u, it’s sad.
How can any one condone this cruel and barbaric practice. The Shooting permits clearly state that only stationary animals can be shot at and it clearly states that each permit will allow 30 black flying foxes; 30 little red flying foxes; 20 grey-headed flying foxes; and 15 spectacled flying foxes. How can any inexperienced person shooting at night identify which species they are shooting at?, how will the government be able to ensure that the licence conditions are upheld?, Will they count each lactating female as 2 deaths? There are so many questions, no answers are being given. Not good enough!!!!
Is this no end to this stupidity by our conservative State Governments? The management of our Environment has been sent back to the 1930s with complete disregard to the immense scientific knowledge gained since then & the hard work of instigating modern conservation & wildlife recovery programs. What’s next – reintroduction of whaling & seal harvesting?
Please stop shooting these beautiful creatures! They are a benifit to our planet and God put them here, like us, for a reason!
If kill one female you are actually killing TWO! She and her baby who will starve without her! Cruelty comes back to haunt those that inflict it….it’s called KARMA!
BEE KIND TO BATS!!!!
It should be relatively simple to find a non lethal deterrent.
Our neighbours reported unraided fruit trees for the first year since their residence here when a couple of dingoes moved in next door. Put some of those massive 1080 funds you seem to splash around with such gay abandon, to a research study to deter, not kill.
Man!!!!!!!!!! you guys are a bunch of phoneys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess the crock hunter was a fluke and the rest of you are as bad as all the serial killers out there.
Without these wonderful creatures the mosquitoes will get out of hand and people like me will become walking buffets for them! Please end this senseless killing of the bats! Every female counts as 2 bats that are killed!
PLEASE STOP THE NETTING! JUST STOP! STOP KILLING THESE WONDERFUL CREATURES. THEY HELP NOT HURT!!!!
Bats make the whole woldwide biodiversity, belong to everybody and everyone… Theyer necessary and useful. They are protected and preserved iall over our Earth… They need to live as we all live, they belong to the Living Nature. Don’t shoot them. We need them.
Murdering bats is wrong. They are part of our natural heritage and deserving of our support as much as koalas and Tasmanian devils.
Stop it. It´s wrong. We need this wonderful animal.

It’s just wrong and unecessary! Brought on by a lazy or ignorant government who could help by farmers by supplying subsides for the netting of the friut. Why doesn’t common sense prevail.
To allow such inhumane TORTURE is barbaric, and serves ONLY to satisfy the BLOODLUST of soul less humans. To kill an innocent, defenseless, LIVING creature that proves no harm(actually HELPS-though this should have NO bearing, as NO living creature should suffer) is disgusting, and MUST be stopped.
I thought the Aussies were very aware of the welfare of their wildlife treasures. I can not understand the standards that are adopted and then ignored just to profit a few. Please put a stop to this senseless killing. Once a species is extinct you can’t bring it back.

Stop killing the bats!!!!!
I am comitted to boycotting travel to Queensland because of your bat policies…I also post all sorts of bat information from this and other Pro-bat websites to my facebook page, to educate my friends and family about your unfair policies towards bats.
The good folks at Bat World have prevailed (again)! If only Mary Cummins would pay up, even a portion of the settlement would go far to make Bat World better for bats in need.
Please stop killing bats.
Killing native animals is indicative of a sick, lazy and stupid government. How many millions of dollars went up in smoke during fireworks displays on New Years Eve? Can we live without one night of wildlife terrorising fireworks and perhaps channel those funds into useful things like wildlife safe full exclusion netting for farmers. DON’T SHOOT OUR BATS LNP.
Se must declare 2013 like “year of protection to the bat”
This is the page of this idea :
Killing bats so that humans can have more food…. have you SEEN us lately – do we LooK like we NEED more food?
RIP Major Lollar. Having read about the wonderful person you were, it is no wonder why your incredible daughter, Amanda is no different and why she came to create Bat World. It is obvious your loving nature and excellent parenting was the true start behind the creation of Bat World. Amanda could not have asked for a better role model. Thank you for all you ever did for the bats. We, who love Bat World will do our best to carry on your legacy. God Bless You!
People are so worried about their money and profit, that killing a beautiful animal seems to be the best answer… I don’t get this! Their numbers are in decline and their service to us can NOT be replaced! ALL bats should be protected and respected all over the world! No one should have the right to harm these animals!
May God be with those helping these and all bats!
Please stop the horrific killing of the amazing sentient beings. Lets share our world.
I stopped believing that human beings are worth saving a long time ago. You can suggest all the wonderful things we’re capable of all you want, but just the fact that we allow innocents to suffer and become extinct all in the name of personal gain renders us undeserving of this earth. We’re all guilty. All of us. I’ll delight in the flames when our society finally destroys itself.
I’m moving back to Australia, and to FNQ at the end of this year, so will be back there and able to vote.
I hope you have gotten back on the path to conservation, or the business plans I have will have to be taken elsewhere.
Australia has the opportunitiy to be a world leader and set an example for the right way of doing things, so get on that path NOW.
This makes me sick! Just appalling..
Inhumane, unconscionable. Offended tourists should stay away in droves.
Please, stop killing th bats. Killing the bats will result in the loss of your trees! Bats are essential to the ecosystem–pollination and insect control. Think before you act!
The people are truly gone mad and their evil ways reveal their nature! Stop this insanity of abuse, torture and cruelty to these bats. The earth does suffer from the ways of man that are blinded to the workings of nature. In the end, everything suffers, even you madmen!
Emails have been sent. Hopefully, these officials will read them and act to stop this.
Can’t help but thinking you are not taking our pleas seriously. You must know that positive action can only save these marvelous creatures that only help our environment.
DON’T SHOOT THE BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE BATS WERE HERE BEFORE ANY OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LEARN FROM THE BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that over 3000 bats have died of natural causes (heat wave) don’t you it’s time time to stop killing them on purpose?
Bats eat insects that invest fruits. So it makes no sense to kill the bats. Nets are far more effective in protecting crops than shot guns. Stop the slaughter of the innocent!!!
All species of bats are endangered all over the world. To target an endangered species for killing is immoral and inhumane. Please, Queensland, STOP.
Please bats are so very important to the Eco System and control the bug population. What is the purpose to all those killings it is inhumane.
Once you’ve killed all the Bats, then what will you do about the insect overpopulation? you then will introduce toxic chemicals that will kill even further. How will your fruit trees get pollinated/ Such ignorance and disregard for live. It’s appalling. I have always dreamed of going to your country, I thought you were more civilized. I guess I was wrong.
I don’t understand how anyone could be do cruel. How would they like it if someone starting shooting at them?! The bastards!
I am so sorry for your loss….but I so enjoyed learning about his life and accomplishments in this post. Major was clearly a force for good throughout his life and brought his talent, generosity, and spirit to the lives and efforts he touched. Thanks to him, the world is a better place. Peace, comfort, and condolences as family and friends mourn his passing – and celebrate his life.
In the picture of Stella by her toy she looks like she is smiling!
They look so happy!
Please don’t look the other way, this needs to stop!
I am planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand with some of my friends and this issue has decided us that we will not come and spend our tourist dollars in Queensland on this trip. Instead we will be sending donations to the bat rescue. Sorry Campbell, you lose.
I always thought Australia was very proud and caring of its wildlife now I guess that was only TV selling an untruth. That you could be so cruel and uncaring about a helpless small animal as a bat is very discouraging. I no longer want to visit your country.
I wish the farmers would realize just how beneficial the bats are to their crops. As for shooting them that’s just barbaric.
glass.house, ashgrove and toowoomba have rejected my email as spam!
So now they are so determined to kill the bats that they will not even received emails contradicting that idea – and this is supposed to be a democratic government?????
Shame on you Queensland
I will send e-mails but I don’t understand how the first sentence makes any sense! Are you saying their response is absurd. What does ” equals the Queensland government’s barbaric killing of flying foxes in absurdity” mean or should it read “an absurdity”. Not trying to be picky here but need to understand what you mean!
Don´t shoot the bats! They are very important for the Eco System!
These are truly beautiful creatures! People need to stop being so ignorant and start appreciating these creatures rather that loathing them.
Honestly what the hell is wrong with you people. I mean for Brahma’s sake i live in America where you would expect this shit. and that would be intolerable here.
Read my Lil Drac book and LOVED it. I had no idea what harassment you endured. I so appreciate your commitment to these amazing creatures.
How deplorable! Stop the killing of these ENDANGERED animals. What a poor reflection on your country – You wont find my travel plans anywhere there!
Man is the only sole reason for the annihilation and destruction of nature and animals. Until the animal dies, then the nature and last but not least the man. That is the poetic justice.
Please do not kill the bats !!!
How human, destroy what you can. How idiotic.
the netting has to stop so crule
Aww, she’s beautiful!
I will not give you people a dime if this is the barbaric behavior you engage in!
i love animals
Stop killing bats, this is sick and harmful behaviour
I love this site. I love bats, and am so happy they are being rescued. It’s time people got to understand and save them. Bless people like you, and all the hard work you are doing on the behalf of these magnificent animals.
I did not know of your work until a friend showed a photo on Facebook, of all places! Great that you help our fellow mammals! Now if we could just get some respect and humane treatment for those we choose to eat.
Pls leave them alone….The animals were on Earth long before us!!!
I grew up in central Texas and had bats next door in the attic of a hundred year old house. My parents loved them, and we would lay outside in the evening to watch them come out and eat. I grew up with skunks, raccoons, possums, etc., and still love rescuing them when I can. Your bats are awesome and beautiful, and want to donate when I can so you can keep doing the wonderful work you do. I share so much, my friends and family are learning more than they ever thought they would. Your bats are so lucky to have you helping them!! Thank you!
We need bats! I don’t understand why anyone would shoot them. Bats control our pest population and are necessary to a healthy eco-system.

It’s so sad how misunderstood these amazing animals are. I cannot believe that a zoo would be so inept at caring for their charges. It is unfortunate that the exotic pet trade even exists, as it removes animals from wild habitats to foreign countries where they could bring in or be exposed to diseases, not to mention that most die in transit. Thank you for your efforts and for posting photos and stories of your beautiful bats.
My name is Tara. I am 42 years old. When I was about 16 I walked in to my bedroom; which as a “rocker kid” I kept fairly dark whith black curtains that I loved and was very particular about; I noticed one of the curtains wasn’t hanging “just right”. When I walked over to correct it, a small bat began to fly around my room. I wasn’t frightened at all, I was in LOVE!!! I very carefully caught her (him?) in a soft sheet. I showed my mother and she was in love too! It was evening and getting dark , so we took her out onto the patio and slowly unwrapped the sheet. I looked at her and cooed and talked to her. I took one finger and VERY gently stroked her fur. She looked up at me then flew away. Since that day I have always wanted a bat as a pet. I never aquired one because I knew I didn’t know enough about them. Also, I am a firm believer that wild animals belong in the wild (unless of course they are in a rescue or sanctuary). I still love bats, but these stories made me cry… the poor little babies! I see bats for sale all the time all over the internet… I feel so sorry for them. In addition, because the further education on this site, I will NEVER own a bat, I will volunteer at a rescue or sanctuary if I can find one in my area!
I’m touched by your story. I want to save bats too. They’re the most beautiful creatures I’ve ever seen!
It’s a bit like rancher-PARASITES wanting to murder all the Wolves & Buffalo, so their cattle can graze in Wild areas, isn’t it?? Wolves & Bison were in amerika FIRST -just like the Bats were in OZ first. I said “F&%# the rancher-PARASITES,” and now I’m saying “F% fruit-growers – the Bats were there first, and evolved to eat fruit!! If you throw corn on the ground, Sparrows will come, and if you grow fruit trees, Fruit Bats will will eat the fruit!! How the hell are they supposed to know some aberrant chimpanzee thinks it’s all his??!!”
I loved this video. I never knew that they played, but it was fun watching them. I loved the music, too. I believe it’s called “Music Box Dancer”. Keep up the good work.
Can you tell me how Mr Kitty’s doing lately? any new pictures?
Please stop netting, it kills bats. Bats are a valuable part of nature. Stop Killing Bats!
I am willing to do whatever it takes. I have launched a campaign to acquire the needed signatures and, as a professional writer and talented public speaker, will follow your lead in an attempt to thwart this woman’s right to care for animals about which she knows nothing.
If you’d like to contact me, please do so. I am willing to to help get Echo to you, and then take financial responsibility for her care and comfort.
My email is*****, and my phone is *****. Please contact me with whatever you need to help gain exposure and support for this cause. I want to do more to help Echo than simply sympathise.
I signed I love bats they are very misunderstood and the poor thing deserves to live its life outside that cage
If echo wasn’t being treated badly I see no harm in having a companion that’s different I had one myself
I had a huge wall to wall walk in environment and in the end I paid to have the bat taken to its normal habitat I bought it as a baby from some guy and I felt bad he was talking of taxidermy at its adult age.so I took it in paid a ridiculous amount and ended up returning it to its natural habitat.best money I spent to date.i imagine it has a family and friends now out there somewhere instead of being preserved in someone’s house like a prize.i love bats but I believe they belong free to fly and live.i hope others sign for this lil one
It sounds like Mary has too much free time on her hands. What a disgrace.

Awwwwwww so cute
Signed. I have no problem with RESPONSIBLE exotic animal ownership. She has shown that she does not really know what she is doing. These animals need very large areas to fly. If anyones thinking about owning an exotic animal, they need to research!
If you are killers of wildlife like Bats, it makes me not want to spend my tourism dollars in your country. Just as I no longer spend even a dime in some of the states hear in the USA that have policies I detest. Bats pollinate flora, they are as essential as bees and birds. Please rethink any considering of slaughtering bats
Killing is NEVER the answer!!!!
I sent the email to the addresses listed. I hope it’s not too late.
Australia, you are my favorite continent and my favorite country in the world and I have visited many. Bats are innocents and they perform a vital function in this world and are unfairly the subject of much abuse and bad press. Please don’t do this, you have alternatives, and there is nothing more precious than life, particularly life of innocents. This is your chance to do something good, DO IT.
I love bats. They are my favorite animals. Lil drac is adorable as well as the other bats!
Don’t shoot bats – these are a precious creature of this world – smart and loving – and have a right to exist in their own right and for our future generations to enjoy as well. Protective netting is a worth investment in this case. DO NOT SHOOT!
This is just uneducated and unbelievably cruel Campbell Newman. I will rally a squad against your cull squad and make sure that there will be enough people to prevent the shooting of any bat. War against your politics is on Campbell.
Please stop killing these beautiful and often misunderstood mammals!!!

I am happy to be able to help Bat World Sanctuary in their efforts to educate and save bats. This cookbook is full of information regarding how bats help with the food we eat on a daily basis and I think it is a brilliant idea! Thank you BWS for doing what you do so well!
Thank you so much!
I am SO glad to hear that these lovelies were not only saved, but are flying freely even now. Bats are such beautiful darlings, and I have admired the acrobatics and laughed at the antics of wild bats flying around lights for years. I’ve even had one swoop in to save me from an “evil” moth flying near my face, one summer night. (A witness, thoroughly scared by this, asked why I wasn’t “freaked out by having a potentially rabid animal try to attack” me. I hope I left her better informed about bats after the lecture!) Lovely videos! I would have loved sound though, to hear their cute little squeeks and chirps! I bet they were rather vocal about the meal worms!
Some of these stories have me crying. How can people be SO cruel to such wonderful free flyers?! It only takes a moment to help them… In 2011, I came home from an errand to see some children poking at something on the ground in the early twilight hours. It wasn’t until heard a familiar squeek that I investigated… They were tormenting a bat! I chased them off and waited a few moments for the poor darling to calm down, then used a long stick to pick it up and lift it to a nearby tree limb. I stayed outside, guarding and watching the poor thing for injuries, hoping so hard that it was okay. After about 20 minutes, it took off into the night with what seemed like a happy thank you squeek, I was SO happy, I didn’t even mind finding that the icecream I had bought had melted. For the next 2 years, I would see that same bat flying about, it always seemed to come catch the insects right outside my window whenever it saw me watching it. I knew it was the same bat, there was a slightly darker patch on it’s head. That little bit of help, with no sacrifice other than the icecream, was so awesome that I smile just thinking about it eve now.
All creatures have a right to live without being abused or mistreated-they are part of the earth’s natural system. Nature should be respected .
What an awesome story! Thank you for sharing, but most of all for saving a life.
